Early Life

Tony Hawk was born on May 12, 1968, in San Diego, California. His parents are Frank Peter Rupert Hawk and Nancy Elizabeth Hawk.

As a young kid, Tony Hawk was psychologically tested and found to be gifted. According to the test, Hawk scored an intelligent quotient (IQ) of 144. Following that, school advisers recommended that he should be placed in advanced classes.

Hawk started skateboarding at the age of eight. His older brother gifted him a used skateboard . Four years later, he got his first sponsorship from Dog town Skateboards. By the time he was fourteen years, he had already turned professional.

Career

Soon after turning professional, Tony Hawk signed with the skateboard team, Powell Peralta. After that, he got featured in the Bones Brigade Video Show in 1984. At the age of 16, Hawk had already become a household name in the world. In fact, he was the best skateboarder in the world star at the time. He would go on to become the National Skateboard Association world champion for twelve years in a row.

During his career as a skateboarder, Tony Hawk won more than seventy competitions.

He also introduced many iconic moves in skateboarding. That includes the gymnast plant, the Saran wrap, the ollie-to-Indy, and the front side 540-rodeo flip.

Hawk’s success as a skateboarder continued until the early ‘90s when interest in the sport began to fade. But in 1995, the sport became a popular celebrity again following the establishment of the Extreme Games (later known as X Games). Hawk went on to win Gold at 10 Extreme Games, as well as 3 Silver and 3 Bronze, respectively.

On June 27, 1999, during one of the X Games, Tony Hawk became the first skateboarder in history to land a “900.” 900 is a trick where a skateboarder revolves 900 degrees midair while riding a skateboard.

Retirement

Following this historic achievement, Tony Hawk decided to retire from professional skateboarding competitions in 2003. However, he actively participated in the annual X Games.  Even then, Tony continued to perform the 900 trick. His recent video of the trick was uploaded on June 27, 2016, when he was 48 years old.

Other ventures

After retiring from professional skateboarding in 2003, Tony Hawk has mostly involved himself in other ventures. This includes an appearance in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. The video game series tells about his life as a skateboarder. Reports tell that the series generated over $1.4 billion. It became one of the most commercially successful video game series.

In 1998, he launched a clothing line known as Hawk Clothing.  The brand developed children’s skating clothes.

In 2002, Tony Hawk launched a traveling sports show called Boom Boom HuckJam. The show offered a platform for upcoming musical acts and vert skaters to display their talents. It also included shows by BMX riders.
