He was said to be earning more than $20 million per year from the endorsements and prize money. Armstrong retired in 2005 as a professional cyclist but continued to earn almost $15 million per year from other means like public appearance fees, motivational speaking, and sponsorships. Early Life 

Lance Armstrong grew up in Plano, Texas. He was born on September 18, 1971. He was only two years old when his father Eddie Charles left him and his mother, Linda Mooneyham. He was ten years old when he started swimming and running. He later began participating in cycling and triathlons. 

Career

Armstrong’s inclination was more towards cycling so he decided to use all his strength and focus to become one of the best cyclists in the world. He trained with the U.S. Olympic Development Team in Colorado Springs during his senior year. In 1989 Armstrong won the title of U.S. National Amateur Champion. After that, he participated in the 1992 Olympics and came in 14th place. He won the World Road Race Championship in Oslo, Norway at the age of 21. Armstrong rose as the star of the world of professional cycling.

Battle with Cancer 

In the Olympics of 1996, Olympic berth found him more exhausted than any other cyclist at his level. It was only after 2 months; Lance was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Cancer spread to his abdomen, lungs, and lymph nodes. Tumors also moved to his brain, and as per doctors, his chances of survival were as low as 40%. Armstrong went through various surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy. According to him, he wanted to get better so that he could one day race again and this thought helped him pass through the difficult time of his life. Armstrong fully recovered from cancer in February 1997.

Return to Cycling 

After recovering from Cancer, Armstrong returned to cycling. He won the Tour De Force France in 1999 and became an international star. After that, he won every single Tour De France till 2005. He announced his retirement the same year. 

Armstrong was not able to keep himself away from cycling and made a comeback in 2009 by participating and winning 3rd position in Tour De France. He retired again in 2010. 

Ban from Professional Cycling 

In June 2012, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) accused Armstrong of using performance-enhancing drugs. The anti-doping agency investigated and filed the charges in October of 2012. Armstrong denied the charges and fought against them but eventually lost his battle with USADA. Armstrong is facing a lifetime ban from professional cycling as a result. The International Olympic Committee asked him to return the bronze medal that he won in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. He eventually lost his Tour De France titles, sponsorships with Nike, Oakley, Trek, and Anheuser Busch. In his interview with Oprah Winfrey, he admitted to doping.

Life Afterwards 

Armstrong’s life surely saw great ups and downs. From being one of the highest-earning athletes in the world to losing his career and money, Lance has come a long way. In 2018, he invested in Uber, as per Bloomberg, his Uber investment is $30 million. Armstrong also earns money through public speaking.
